7.6 million people die of cancer worldwide and WHO projections state that cancer will be the top killing disease from 2020. Current cancer treatments are limited in their effectiveness with poor 5 year survival rates of just 55% . To develop more effective cancer treatment regimes, we need to better understand molecular mechanisms of cancer pathogenesis, drug resistance, and causes of clinical relapse. To investigate these mechanisms, state of the art biochemistry shall therefore be combined with new interdisciplinary approaches.
My research is comitted to these interdisciplinary approaches. These approaches include computational modelling of signalling pathways and of cellular bioenergetics, analytical mathematical modelling to extract principles of spatial and temporal signal transduction, and biophysical modelling to explain protein activity from structural and biophysical principles.
